Firewalls

If you haven't read the Security page yet, please do so first unless you already have a good understanding of computer security.

Be aware that if you use a cable or DSL modem, you are especially vulnerable to virus infections. A cable or DSL network is just that: a network. When you connect your computer to one of those networks, you are exposing your computer to all the other users on the same segment of that network. It is extremely important that you secure your computer by using a firewall to block external/illegal access to your computer.

We highly recommend using a Linksys Router to secure your computer from unwanted access. Just ask us for instructions on how to connect the router and your computers when you purchase one at our store. Sure, you can buy one at Wal-Mart or someplace like that - but do you think they can help you configure your network?

Using a router/firewall is no substitute for using anti-virus software. It is best if you use both a firewall AND an anti-virus solution because they do two very different things.
